What is Covid-19 ?

Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses which originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan, and have now been reported around the world. The virus can cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). A novel coronavirus (nCoV)is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans. Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted from animals to people. This disease can sometimes be deadly. Detailed investigations found that SARS-CoV was transmitted from civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from dromedary camels to humans. Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans. Covid-19 has no approved treatment or vaccine as of yet.

What are the symptoms?

It is a respiratory illness. Mild symptoms including a runny nose, sore throat, dry cough, and fever. The symptoms are similar to that of other respiratory illnesses, such as common cold and influenza. The severity of COVID-19 symptoms can range from very mild to severe. Under severe conditions, this could lead to pneumonia, SARS, and even death. People who are older or have existing medical conditions, such as heart disease, may be at higher risk of serious illness. According to the World Health Organisation, it takes 14 days after exposure for symptoms to develop. But recent research suggests it can take 24 days for the symptoms to appear.

What to do ?

1) Wash your hands frequently and clean your hands with alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. 2) Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing. When someone coughs or sneezes they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person coughing has the disease. 3) Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth. Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick. 4) Make sure you and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your crook elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose the used tissue immediately. Droplets spread virus. By following good respiratory hygiene you protect the people around you from viruses such as cold, flu and COVID-19. 5) Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance. Follow the directives of your local health authority. 6) National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on the situation in your area. Calling in advance will allow your health care provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This will also protect you and help prevent spread of viruses and other infections.

How dangerous is the coronavirus?

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO) of 56,000 patients, four out of every five people have the slightest symptom. Accordingly, 80% exhibit minor symptoms. 14% show severe symptoms. 6% show dangerous symptoms. Although the percentage of people who die from the virus is as low as 1% or 2%, the numbers are uncertain. Thousands of patients are currently receiving treatment and many are dying. So the death rate can be much higher. Also, the number of people with minor symptoms is not certain and the mortality rate is likely to drop. More than 92,000 people worldwide have been infected with the virus, and more than 3,000 have died. 1990- Suwasariya Ambulance Service 119 – Police Emergency Call Centre 011-2422222- Fire and Rescue / Ambulance 011-2421052 – Torists police 011-2691111 – General Hopital Colombo
